For Months Leading up to Election Day, Florida OB/GYNs Highlighted Dangerous Risks of Now-Defeated Proposal
Washington, DC – Tonight, the Florida Physicians Against Amendment 4 celebrate victory as Florida voters reject proposed Constitutional Amendment 4, which would have made Florida one of the most dangerous places in the country for pregnant women seeking care.
Dr. Christina Francis, CEO of AAPLOG Action, the advocacy arm of the American Association of Pro-life OB/GYNs, praised the outcome, saying:
“Today’s victory in Florida is unprecedented – and should be viewed as the start of a revolution for women’s healthcare in America. After seven devastating losses in states across the nation, the people of Florida, led by the physicians who treat them, have resisted attempts to put politics ahead of compassionate and excellent care. Now is the time to build on that momentum. At AAPLOG Action, we will continue our work to dismantle the weaponization at the upper echelons of the medical community against the majority of OB/GYNs who do not offer induced abortions, which harm our maternal patients and end the lives of our fetal patients.”
Dr. Christina Peña, an OB/GYN practicing in Miami added:
“Amendment 4 would have been devastating for women, and for doctors. Cementing abortion into the Florida constitution while at the same time eliminating key health and safety standards would be both reckless and dangerous. It became clear very early on that Amendment 4 was an attempt to save the business of abortion in our great state… but we physicians are in the business of saving lives, and we could not stand by and let our patients be subjected to such an extreme, dangerous proposal. Now, we physicians can stay true to our Hippocratic oath to do no harm to our patients. I can continue to safely care for women in Florida, and provide them with the full scope of care including for life threatening complications as with ectopic pregnancies, miscarriage and sepsis.”
Florida Physicians Against Amendment 4 is a network of over seven hundred physicians across Florida from Jacksonville down to Miami, spanning 50+ specialties practicing in over a hundred cities and virtually every county.
