The 2024 election cycle presented one of the greatest challenges—and opportunities—for the pro-life movement since the fall of Roe v. Wade. Across the country, abortion activists pursued state constitutional amendments designed to remove longstanding safeguards for women and preborn children, often relying on the voices of a few medical professionals to portray abortion as essential healthcare.
AAPLOG Action recognized early that if these battles were going to be won, life-affirming physicians needed to be at the forefront.
Throughout the election cycle, AAPLOG Action organized, trained, and mobilized medical coalitions in key states, bringing together doctors willing to speak publicly about the medical realities of induced abortion and the consequences of radical abortion ballot initiatives. In Florida, South Dakota, Arizona, Colorado, and beyond, physicians helped ensure that voters heard evidence-based medical perspectives rather than one-sided political messaging.
The result was a historic breakthrough: after two years of statewide ballot losses for the pro-life movement, physician-led coalitions helped secure victories in Florida and South Dakota while laying the groundwork for a new model of medical advocacy nationwide.
The Plan
AAPLOG Action’s strategy began with a simple premise: physicians are among the most trusted voices in the public sphere, and this is particularly true when it comes to the topic of abortion.
For years, abortion advocates have increasingly relied on doctors and medical organizations to argue that abortion is necessary, beneficial, and even synonymous with women’s healthcare. Recognizing this trend, AAPLOG Action was launched to ensure voters heard from physicians who provide life-affirming care and who reject the notion that abortion is the answer to every difficult pregnancy situation.
As AAPLOG Action CEO, Dr. Christina Francis, wrote during the campaign, pro-life physicians were preparing to “counter the misleading medicalization of induced abortion” by bringing their own clinical and scientific expertise and patient-centered perspectives directly to voters. To do this, AAPLOG Action established statewide physician coalitions in four of the states facing pro-abortion constitutional amendments—providing media training, developing coordinated messaging, and equipping doctors to engage with the press and public.
Florida: Florida Physicians Against Amendment 4
Nowhere was this effort more visible than in Florida.
AAPLOG Action helped launch Florida Physicians Against Amendment 4, a coalition that ultimately grew to more than 700 medical professionals representing more than 50 specialties and practicing in communities across virtually every county in the state.
The coalition officially entered the public debate through opinion pieces and media engagement before rapidly expanding its reach. Physicians traveled across the state, participated in several major press conferences alongside Governor Ron DeSantis, gave television and radio interviews in both English and Spanish, and educated voters about the impact of Amendment 4. Their message was clear: physicians who care for women every day had serious concerns about embedding an expansive abortion policy into the Florida Constitution.
By Election Day, coalition physicians had participated in dozens of media interviews, generated hundreds of news stories, and reached hundreds of thousands of voters through digital communications and social media outreach. Florida Physicians Against Amendment 4 contributed to one of the most significant victories of the election cycle as Amendment 4 failed to secure the support required for passage.
South Dakota: Doctors for Dakotans
AAPLOG Action also helped establish Doctors for Dakotans, a coalition of medical professionals committed to educating voters about the dangers of Amendment G in South Dakota.
Physicians authored opinion pieces, participated in media interviews, and explained how South Dakota’s laws protect women while preserving the ability of physicians to provide life-saving care when necessary. AAPLOG Action supplied media training, communications support, and strategic guidance that enabled local physicians to become effective advocates in their communities.
When voters ultimately rejected Amendment G, it marked another significant victory for the pro-life movement and further demonstrated the power of organized physician engagement in statewide ballot campaigns.
